About the Company

Redwood Climate Communications, an SBS company, is a strategic communications firm dedicated exclusively to serving clients in climate tech and sustainability. Led by industry veteran Josh Garrett and formed in partnership with leading tech communications consultancy SBS Comms, Redwood’s mission is to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis with strategic, memorable, and accessible communications strategies and tactics. Redwood works with companies and nonprofits from across the climate tech and sustainability sectors, from carbon removal to electric mobility. Current and past clients include Mast Reforestation, Electric Hydrogen, Sealed, and The Nature Conservancy.

Redwood offers paid and for-credit full-time internships to current students, recent graduates, and early career professionals with an educational background in communications and PR and are looking to apply these newfound skills to do meaningful, impactful work in the climate and sustainability sectors. Through Redwood's Internship Program, candidates will gain hands-on experience, learn best practices, and be equipped with tactical skills that will prepare them for a career as an effective climate/sustainability communications practitioner.

Program Details

  • Current internship offerings are for a 6-month period. We typically hire around December and June, with start dates in January and July, respectively.

  • This is a fully remote opportunity with flexibility around schedules, however, candidates must be able to commit a minimum of 40 hours per week. Candidates will be able to choose their schedule, and while schedules are flexible, candidates are required to stick to this schedule for the length of their internship. Work hours preferred to coincide with Eastern Time business hours.

  • Candidates will be required to follow all of Redwood’s company policies and procedures, just as any of Redwood’s full-time employees. This opportunity is an at-will employment.

  • Candidates will be hired as contractors and paid $18-22/hour, depending on experience, and must be eligible to work in the United States. Depending on availability and performance, candidates may be offered a salaried, full-time position with benefits within the firm.

  • Candidates can also use this opportunity to earn academic credit. Candidates will work closely with the Internship Manager, including determining scope of work, completing evaluation form, etc., to ensure that their school’s obligations for internship credits are fulfilled.

Required Qualifications

  • Dedication to advancing solutions to the climate crisis and making a positive impact on the world with your career 

  • Demonstrated interest in climate tech companies, nonprofits, industry groups, or related organizations working towards sustainable solutions

  • Interest in and attentiveness to news and influencers in the climate tech and sustainability spaces

  • Excellent organizational skills 

  • Natural ability to think critically and analytically 

  • Collaborative team player with innate curiosity, a desire to learn new things, and a willingness to take on new challenges

  • Desire to get into an exciting new organization and help it grow

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic or professional experience working in strategic communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field

  • Strong writing and/or editing skills 

  • Academic or professional experience working with teams 

  • Academic background (bachelor’s or advanced degree) in climate or environmental studies or a related field

General Responsibilities

  • Research. Efficiently seek out information on climate and sustainability technologies, current events, and social media trends. 

  • Client Relations. Help with basic administrative tasks such as coordinating schedules, drafting meeting agendas, taking notes during meetings, creating documents, and helping organize the filing system.

  • Media and Analyst Relations. Help with producing lists of relevant news outlets and reporters and backgrounders to help clients prepare for interviews.

  • Writing and editing. Draft some written materials for clients, e.g. press releases, marketing content, social media copy, etc.

  • Social media. Contribute to social media content by drafting thoughtful copy for Redwood’s LinkedIn and Instagram that’s on trend. Preference for some graphic design experience, but not required.

  • Flexibility. Be ready and willing to take on unexpected tasks and responsibilities to benefit clients and/or the firm.
